A reclaimed bench
- flexible social infrastructure

stage: completed 2017
type: design and construction
area: 40sqm

The design-build process allowed for a creative recycling approach – most of the materials found on site were reused and given a new life, often in a new form. Consequently, the wooden boarding got turned into shelves, balustrades or seating; a large portion of the brick was used as inbuilt furniture and filling material; and recovered metal sections were used as support for the new external staircase. The floors and walls, after getting stripped of the brick cladding, got polished cement finishes inspired by the typical Goan colour palette.

In a bid to minimise the need for the new materials, the outside area is finished entirely in natural materials available at the site – the rammed earth-stabilised floor and mud plaster in built benches · forming a courtyard and an informal seating space.
