Design-Build Cooperative
- reserch on working methods
Conventionally, architects tend to monopolise information and knowledge during the design process, performing most of the empowering tasks as the primary link with those in need of the architectural service.
The Bangalore Design-Build Co-op, seeks to bridge the gap between the architects and those physically constructing the building, whilst offering a comprehensive service where the hands-on expertise is readily available. The initiative takes the responsibilities of the architect and contractor under one roof in a profit-sharing model.
At the co-operative, architects and the construction workers, masons, carpenters and welders work together as a cohesive team creating a vibrant workplace where the design process is open and dynamic.
Whilst the cooperative works on the basis of a profit sharing model it offers service as a regular commercial unit. The profits are additionally used for continuous training and building the capacity of the team.

The construction process during which architect works on site directly with the construction team gives an opportunity to test solutions and immediately feed the findings back to the design.
In Bangalore, frequently, the construction teams comprise of the new migrants to the city, coming from different parts of India, often forming groups with no common language. Introducing a common drawing language, a non-verbal communication via simple sketches helps to overcome the language barrier and turns the sketchbook into a tool which is not reserved solely for the architects.
Those simple sketches, aksonometrics, 1:1 chalk drawings on walls, floors prove that the simple communication techniques not only help with the construction work-flow and team members engagement but also give a positive spin to the detail design development.
