Grain &amp; Grid House

	Bangalore Design and Build Co-Op
role: project leadlocation: Hennur, Bangalorestage: completed 2021service included: design-build
area: 410sqm

A home for a young family located on a tight urban plot in Bangalore.
The building is defined by a strict grid, shifting floor levels and double height volumes which allow for a large connected open shared space.The structure employs stabilised rammed earth walls in combination with exposed concrete and a structural timber frame. The spatial organisation opens toward a front garden and a series of internal courtyards, each establishing a distinct relationship between interior and exterior. These connections are modulated through carefully designed openings, louvres, and shutters, allowing for a nuanced gradation of privacy and unique spatial qualities throughout the home.
A generous central staircase and an internal garden stitch the split-level spaces together, while also enhancing passive cooling through stack ventilation. Reclaimed teak wood is restored and reshaped to form large louvred openings, enabling natural ventilation. Cross-ventilation, northern skylights, and adjustable shading elements work in tandem to optimise the local climate and reduce the need for air conditioning.
Material choices reflect both craft and context: rammed earth walls using local soils in varying tones, polished concrete partitions, floors with brass inlays, and sculpted custom-made doors, windows, and built-in furniture. Brought together under one roof, the house exemplifies the potential of a multidisciplinary cooperative approach to design and construction.

	Courtyard House

	Bangalore Design and Build Co-op
role: project lead
location: Sakar Nagar, Bangalorestage: completed 2021service included: architecture, interior and landscape design area: 380sqm
A house situated on the edge of a eucalyptus plantation is offering a unique setting within the otherwise dense urban fabric of Bangalore. Around a third of the site is reserved for greenery. The two courtyards are protruding into the form of the building allowing for blurred boundaries between the inside and the outside. An open plan ground floor living space provides glimpses of the garden from each location: study, living room, dining and kitchen.

Aiming to provide comfort within an open, non-air-conditioned space, special attention was given to the strategic placement of the openings allowing for natural ventilation and light spaces which still guarantee a level of privacy.

The large sliding openings and wooden screens allow the inhabitants of the space to have control over how connected they are to the surrounding. All the rooms, even those&nbsp; at the back of the building, offer a view of the eucalyptus plantation or the private courtyard gardens, avoiding direct views at the very proximate neighbouring properties’ walls.

Abstract:

While boundaries define the spatial order of the built environment, their ambivalent nature can constitute not only divisions and separation, but also built fabric’s stitches with a capacity to foster connections. A physical manifestation of boundaries defines domesticity and inhabitants’ relation to the outside, at the same time shaping local co-existence by characterising fringes of the public sphere. A transition from private to public can be formed by a sequence of thresholds and vestibules, each with affordance for a particular visual or direct relation. The focus of the study lies in delaminating vertical separators into elements which selectively fulfil their intrinsic functions, aiding gradual transitions and the formation of porous margins. The research is based on a review and analysis of design tools and methods used in a series of small-scale, predominantly residential projects located in India and Poland. Both the post-communist and post-colonial contexts were subject to socio-political transformations which affected the perception of security and privacy needs, as well as the attitude towards ownership status. The climatic requirements of the tropics and those in the northern hemisphere grant an additional dimension to the evaluation and typological classification of walls and wall-like devices.

If one were to use architecture to illustrate the different ideological positions, then for modernist architects, the wall of a building would be a mediating membrane between the inside and the outside. For post-modernists, the wall is the screen on which the message is projected. Neoreactionaries need the wall only as a meter-thick concrete barrier to protect the space inside the bunker.

Krzysztof Nawratek, Granice, Interfejsy, Infrastruktura, Autoportret, 2020
As the hermetic borders between private and public domains solidify—a process driven by neoliberal attachment to asset ownership (particularly land), growing socio-economic disparity, and increasingly self-contained modes of living—urban space becomes even more fragmented, and accessible shared spaces grow scarce. What follows is the dissolution of locally rooted social ties, and thresholds—once liminal zones of exchange— are now frequently replaced by hardened barriers, stripped of their placemaking potential and affordances for interaction. As Nancy Frazer suggests, capitalist urbanisation as a medium for social reproduction marked by isolation and segregation imbues boundaries and the form they assume with a distinct political dimension.

Thus, the foundation of this research is based on the boundary’s capacity to act as a spatial element that not only reflects but also enacts local political agency—by forming spaces of transition and urban fabric ‘stitches’ (Young, 2018, p. 17) rather than serving merely as a point of division. The aim is to explore design strategies that use thresholds and liminal zones as spatial tools that not only augment the domestic sphere but also constitute a portion of the public domain impacting the local social dynamics.

The phenomenon of compound-like, privatised portions of land standing bereft of any relation to their surroundings is especially evident where rapid development and profound social and economic transformations have occurred in a relatively short time. Consequently this research situates itself across two distinct contexts—Poland and India—where socio-political circumstances have uniquely shaped attitudes t oward both property ownership and boundary-making. Self-authored projects set in these two different contexts will serve as a testing ground for strategies that aim to develop a spectrum of architectural solutions for richer, more diverse sets of spaces that produce a coherent environment without abrupt physical or visual barriers.

The study investigates a design method that conceptualises spatial experience through avisual narrative shaped by a sequence of specific architectural moments. Accordingly, scripting the experience of liminality and the formation of thresholds lies at the core of the concept development approach. The proposed strategy places a narrative of progression through space as pivotal to the design development. This approach informs the form and porosity of the building, the functional layout, and, by defining a versatility of connections to the outer realm, provides affordance for a manifold of specific activities and behaviours. As Beisswenger writes in relation to Le Corbusier’s Promenade Architecturale, to appreciate the spatial experience through movement, one has to “challenge the perspective of visualising spaces or representing the design from the point of view of a single immobile viewer”(Beisswenger, 2021).

Consequently, the proposed approach aims for a gradual transition between territories, a transition formed by a sequence of thresholds and vestibules, with each component contributing to a particular connection to the adjacent territory. The proposed design strategy involves an analysis of varied spatial connections to the surrounding realm, shaping fringes of the public sphere and influencing the local urban narrative, rather than solely focusing on the form, functionality and the aesthetics of the conceptualised structure. The proposed design strategy advocates using boundary as a generative element with strong social and political agency in defining the connection between Aristotle’s oikos and polis.

 Setting a narrative for visual connectivity&nbsp;
- Design Method Study

	While investigating the aspects of the boundary, periphery and transition spaces, I am interested in testing the relevance of the Theory of Affordances by J. J. Gibson and the associated nomenclature applied to describe the subtle moments of the documented design interventions. Thus, I look at the given space as a medium where certain qualities of surfaces and their layout create affordance for specific activities – be it a flat surface suitable for sitting, an alcove inviting to stop by or a sunny wall patch conducive for comfortable leaning and engaging in a conversation.

The aim is to categorise the previously intuitively used design tools based on the psychology of ecological perception and appreciate the direct linkage between the design’s nuances and the subsequent use - paving the way to explicit design methods and the placemaking process. A systematised catalogue of the design tools relating to the structure of reflected light, relative point of view, textures or even the roundness or sharpness of edges grants a possibility of a more rigorous appraisal of the existing and future design outcomes.I am studying how the positioning of such an underlying sequence narrative as pivotal to the design strategy impacts the trajectory of the process, shapes the final porosity of the built fabric, as well as impacts the subsequent use. Giving this additional attention to the perception mechanisms which impact the design methods, particularly concerning the visual connectivity, I look at the new, apt ways of representation and appraisal of the designed fabric porosity. And so, I am delaminating all the built structures between the private domain and public realm into layers that act as visual connectivity filters – this helps to visualise and code the direct link between the gradation of privacy and porosity of the built fabric). The envelope of the building stripped down to information showing it solely as a filter for visual connectivity acting in a specific depending on the point of view, proves valid as means to a retrospective assessment of past projects and as a design tool for the current ones.

Consequently, scripting the experience of liminality and the formation of thresholds lies at the core of the tested concept development approach. Positioning the impressions evoked by progression through space as pivotal to the design process impacts the functional layout, shapes the porosity of the envelope, and, by defining a versatility of connections to the outer realm, provides affordance for a manifold of specific activities. Such a narrative, or a spatial script of the experience conditioned by the connectivity with the outer realm, is to emerge from architect-user collaboration and prior discussions about the form of the building. The architectural solutions and their aesthetics become a consequence of the carefully curated and deliberated spatial script.

As Beisswenger writes in relation to Le Corbusier’s Promenade Architecturale, in order to appreciate spatial experience through movement, one has to “challenge the perspective of visualising spaces or representing the design from the point of view of a single immobile viewer.”1 Giving specific attention to perception mechanisms and states of liminality, the focus of the investigation is directed at the ways of representing those notions, which are difficult to grasp with the use of standard architectural drawings. The adopted method involves an appraisal of the graphic communication techniques, which aim to explicitly visualise the experience of traversing through space. The script emerging from architect-user collaboration, allows for a mental map of spatial experience to be gradually composed of a series of anticipated moments and glimpses: fragmentary extractions of the given surrounding environment context.

The approach involves evaluating each portion of the future building envelope and detecting the exact need for the wall function in the particular areas of the designed structures. Instead of tackling all intrinsic wall functions at once, the tasks can be selectively fulfilled, combined, overlapped, and sequenced. Sou Fujimoto refers to the process as dismantling the wall—a way of more purposeful use of vertical separators and tactics that allow avoiding generic solutions to the envisaged space enclosure. Whereas Daniel Bonilla discusses the act of dissolving the edge as a means of creating usable threshold zones. With these design methods, the boundary is stretched and stratified into multiple layers, resulting in a sequence of spaces that allow for varied levels of privacy and visual connectivity.

Developing a spatial narrative as the design process resembles conceptualising a set for a movie scene. A setting fit for a particular activity and creating a particular mood. Building a narrative involves conceptualising the experience of trans-passing and leading users through spaces, each with a unique connection to the outside world. Will someone slow down due to a glimpse of a view they caught on the side? Will someone else look up while passing a sky-well?

	stage: completed 2017

type: design and construction

area: 40sqm<img width="6475" height="7087" width_o="6475" height_o="7087" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3e6f7e6ee3b8876310dbca473edf00a51aa1ebfaf0a192f2599eb674e40588ac/seating-nossa_edit--2.jpg" data-mid="214858343" border="0" data-scale="88" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3e6f7e6ee3b8876310dbca473edf00a51aa1ebfaf0a192f2599eb674e40588ac/seating-nossa_edit--2.jpg" />
The design-build process allowed for a creative recycling approach – most of the materials found on site were reused and given a new life, often in a new form. Consequently, the wooden boarding got turned into shelves, balustrades or seating; a large portion of the brick was used as inbuilt furniture and filling material; and recovered metal sections were used as support for the new external staircase. The floors and walls, after getting stripped of the brick cladding, got polished cement finishes inspired by the typical Goan colour palette. In a bid to minimise the need for the new materials, the outside area is finished entirely in natural materials available at the site – the rammed earth-stabilised floor and mud plaster in built benches · forming a courtyard and an informal seating space.

	From Margin to Management
Empowering Women in a Design-Build Cooperative&nbsp;

	<img width="3011" height="3011" width_o="3011" height_o="3011" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2df494212175bd1993ed75ffeb73f180a7881327f19c976f14766a5f4e48a820/better-res-oven.jpg" data-mid="154697690" border="0" data-scale="90" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2df494212175bd1993ed75ffeb73f180a7881327f19c976f14766a5f4e48a820/better-res-oven.jpg" />In the Indian construction context, it is common for women to be present on site—either as companions to their husbands, who live and work on location, or as labourers hired for physically demanding and repetitive tasks such as sand sifting or transporting bricks. Despite the strenuous nature of their work, women are typically remunerated at approximately half the wage of the lowest-paid male labourers. Efforts to alter this status quo and to redefine gender roles on site are often met with resistance—not only from men, but, perhaps more unexpectedly, from women as well.

One of the ongoing objectives of the cooperative initiative has been to expand the scope of women’s participation on construction sites beyond unskilled labour. This includes creating pathways for women to engage in creative and decision-making tasks, and introducing equal pay policies. The initiative also aims to formalise roles that women frequently undertake informally—such as overseeing material storage, monitoring tools, and maintaining order on site—without official recognition or remuneration.

As part of this work, the cooperative actively invites women who accompany their partners to participate in all training sessions and capacity-building opportunities. The increased presence and formal acknowledgement of women’s roles on site has demonstrably improved workflow and site organisation, underscoring the importance of gender-inclusive labour practices in the construction industry.

The place surrounding this makeshift stove, became an assembly point, a decision-making space as well as one used during leisure time. It gradually expanded and gained new functions, becoming a make-shift architectural site office and naturally constituting a hang-out area for all the cooperative members for the duration of the construction.

	Natural Materials &amp; Traditional Technologies
- On-Site Research

	Design-build model of operation offers projects an opportunity for experimentation and research into the most desirable, practical and affordable solutions without the design compromise. On-site experiments with materials constantly feeds back to the design.

The explorations involved rammed earth construction and its feasibility, ferrocement testing, reclaimed wood adaptation, natural pigments and mud plasters sampling.&nbsp;
